Benjamin C. Brower, IHS Fellow and Associate Professor, is the author of A Desert Named Peace: The Violence of French Empire in the Algerian Sahara, 1844-1902 (Columbia University Press, 2009). He is currently at work on a second book project entitled "The Colonial Hajj, 1798-1962." His research interests focus on European imperialism, questions of secularism and Islam, and understanding violence in history.
