A biennial event supported by an endowment from UT benefactor Major George Littlefield, the Littlefield Lectures bring distinguished scholars of Southern history to campus for a series of public talks on consecutive days. He is the author of nine books, including The Promise of the New South: Life After Reconstruction (1992), a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and In the Presence of Mine Enemies, War in the Heart of America, 1859-1863, awarded the 2004 Bancroft Prize for the most distinguished book in American history.
