History grad student recipient of research award

Posted: January 29, 2007

Mann will be using his award to do pre-dissertation research on the tribes of Khuzistan in southwestern Iran during the late 19th and early 20th centuries at the British Archives in Kew, UK. His dissertation, a social/cultural study focusing on the "national identity" of Arab and Turkic tribes in Iran, looks at how these peoples were affected by Iranian nationalism as well as Arab nationalism during the time Iran was undergoing the constitutional process and later experiencing the rise of Reza Khan.

Since the British had been in Khuzistan for decades prior to this, and continued to have a presence due to the oil discovered in the region, the Archives provide a rich source of information on the tribes and their relations with the British as well as the governments in Tehran.
