Prof. Lawrence receives prestigious awards for his latest book

The prestigious Paul Birdsall Prize is given biennially to major works in European military history since 1870, while the George Lewis Beer Prize honors works in post-1895 European international history. Lawrence will receive both prizes in Atlanta at the annual AHA conference, taking place from January 4-7.
Assuming the Burden offers a offers a fresh interpretation of the origins of the American commitment to Vietnam, exploring U.S. involvement there before Washington made its first commitments of military and economic aid in 1950.
According to the Journal of Military History, “Lawrence offers a broad-based and genuinely original analysis both of the role of foreign policy within and foreign pressure on America in this period.”
