Texas Parents' Weekend

Posted: October 21, 2005

This is a parent's chance to be a student for the day, talk to their children's professors and even go to a lecture together. Several of the History Department's distinguished teaching faculty will be giving lectures.

Dr. G. Howard Miller, Distinguished Teaching Professor, will give a lecture on "Jesus in American Culture." This multi-media lecture will look at the changing role of Jesus Christ in American culture from the first settlement to the present. Come see how the second person of the Christian Trinity has come to dominate American Christianity and become a cultural symbol that transcends all religious expressions.
Time: 10:00-10:40 a.m., Location: Welch, Room 2.312

Dr. Janet Davis will lecture on "Circus Day, U.S.A., Circa 1900." At the turn of the twentieth century, the annual arrival of the circus shut a town down - schools cancelled classes and factories closed their doors. This class will explore the social and cultural significance of "Circus Day" in America at a historical moment rife with enormous change.
Time: 10:50-11:30 a.m., Location: Welch, Room 2.308

Dr. George Forgie, Distinguished Teaching Professor, will give a lecture titled "Was Secession Constitutional?" Historians and others still debate whether the southern states that seceded from the Union in 1860-61 had a constitutional right to separate from the United States. This class will hear the arguments on both sides as they were made in the period before the Civil War and then vote on whether, in the context of the times, states had a right to secede.
Time: 11:40 a.m.-12:20 p.m., Location: Welch, Room 2.312

Take advantage of this opportunity to experience the joy of learning at UT. Have your children show you around campus!

While Mini-Classes are free, it is advised that you register to reserve a seat. More registration info...
