LIN 372K • Sound Patterns: Sound to Word

Course Description

Part of knowing how to speak a language is knowing what sounds go where. This knowledge is phonology: the set of restrictions on the distribution of speech sounds in a language. This course provides an introduction to phonology in human languages. It will cover the following topics (among others): • What kinds of restrictions on distribution occur? • How are these restrictions represented in speakers’ minds? • Where do these restrictions come from? • How do speakers learn them?

Grading Policy

The grade will be based on homework assignments (about one a week) and two quizzes.
