Course Description
This course examines the growth and spread of English around the world. We begin with an overview of linguistic concept and terminology. Then we turn to a brief account of the historical and social forces that shaped the Age of Exploration especially in regard to the English-speaking peoples of Britain. We will look at the transplantation process of the language to Ireland; American, in the larger sense of that term which includes Canada and the Caribbean; Africa; Central and Southeast Asia; and Oceania; and we will develop a linguistic profile of the varieties of English in those regions.
