Program of Study for Syntax and Semantics Students

All PhD students interested in syntax and/or semantics should take the following courses (in addition to required courses):

  • 381S Semantics II (+)
  • 392 ‘Syntax III’ (HPSG or LFG)
  • At least 2 additional syntax or semantics seminars

The following courses are also highly recommended:

  • Pragmatics
  • Structure of language X (offered in Linguistics Dept. or language departments)
  • Morphology
  • Computational Linguistics (+)

These are recommended ‘minor area’ supporting courses:

  • Field methods (+)
  • Language Acquisition (+)
  • Cognitive Science (+)

Notes: · Courses marked with (+) are part of the ‘optional core’. You must take at least two courses from the optional core. Other optional core courses not listed above are: 380S Sociolinguistics and 393.4 Neurolinguistics. You also may want to check other departments (Philosophy, language departments, Anthropology) for course offerings. You are encouraged to participate in the Syntax-Semantics Reading Group and to audit seminars even if you are not registered.
