M.A. Program

Following are the requirements for the M.A. in Linguistics:

  1. All courses in this group, twelve hours:
    • LIN 381M Phonetics
    • LIN 380K Phonology I
    • LIN 380L Syntax I
    • LIN 381K Phonology II or LIN 381L Syntax II

  2. Three hours from:
    • LIN 380M Semantics I
    • LIN 382 Historical Linguistics

  3. Six hours from:
    • LIN 380M Semantics I
    • LIN 380S Sociolinguistics
    • LIN 381K Phonology II
    • LIN 381L Syntax II
    • LIN 381S Semantics II
    • LIN 382 Historical Linguistics
    • LIN 385 Field Methods in Linguistic Investigation
    • LIN 393 Neurolinguistics
    • LIN 386M Computational Linguistics
    • LIN 392 Introduction to Language Acquisition

  4. For students selecting the report option:
    • Six hours of graduate Linguistics seminars
    • LIN 398R with one report

  5. For students selecting the thesis option:
    • Three hours of graduate Linguistics seminars
    • LIN 698a & LIN698b with thesis

  6. Six hours in a minor area

  7. Language requirement
    • Oral and written competence in English sufficient to complete all other degree requirements.
    • Four semesters of study (or equivalent proficiency) of one language other than English, or two semesters of study (or equivalent proficiency) in each of two languages other than English.

    For our purpose, language is defined as any non-English natural language. Previous college level work as certified by transcript may be used to satisfy these requirements. Please check with the Graduate Advisor early in your program to determine your language obligation. Students may not use courses labeled "for graduate students" (FR 301, GER 301, SPN 301) to fulfill their language requirement.

A given course may not be used to satisfy a requirement in more than one area above.
