Honors Program
Upper-division linguistics majors who wish to qualify for special honors in linguistics should
apply to the undergraduate honors adviser for admission to the honors program no later than the
beginning of their last year.
A University grade point average of at least 3.00 is required for admission. The requirements for
graduation with special honors in Linguistics are:
- Linguistics 679H--Two part, two semester Honors Tutorial Course, consisting of 679HA,
supervised individual reading, and 679HB, research and writing to produce a substantial paper.
Note that both 679HA and 679HB are three hour, not six hour courses. (Topic of paper, including
phonology, syntax, and others, must be approved by the undergraduate honors advisor.
A grade of at least "B" is required in both 679HA and 679HB.)"
- A University grade point average of 3.00 and a grade point average in Linguistics of at least 3.50.
- Completion at the University of at least sixty semester hours counted toward the degree.
The statement "Special Honors in (name of department or program)" appears on the transcript of
each graduate certified as having completed the honors program of that department. Normally, students
may receive special honors in only one department or program, and only in a department or program in
which they have completed the requirements for a major. Students seeking an exception to this policy
should consult the academic dean.
