Undergraduate Program

Introduction

The undergraduate major in linguistics provides students with a thorough understanding of how languages can be investigated and described.

Beyond LIN 306 (Introduction to the Study of Language), a series of core courses examines:

  • the physical properties of speech sounds and how they are perceived (LIN 344K: Phonetics),
  • the use of speech sounds to form words (LIN 372K: Sound Patterns),
  • how words are combined to form meaningful phrases (LIN 372L: Syntax and Semantics),
  • and how and why languages change over time (LIN 345: Language Change and Language Variation).

The department also offers an array of electives that examine such topics as neurolinguistics (that is, the relationship between language and the brain) and Black English.

If you have any questions after reading the available material, please contact the Undergraduate Coordinator.
