Departmental Aid
All applicants for admission are automatically considered for Departmental teaching assistantships and University Fellowships (see How to Apply).
Departmental financial aid for continuing students (TAships, AIships, Continuing Student University Fellowships) is awarded on the basis of academic achievement through a competition held each spring. To apply for a Continuing University Fellowship or a Linguistics Department teaching assistantship, you must submit the following directly to the Graduate Coordinator.
- a completed Application for Financial Award
- three letters of recommendation from University of Texas faculty who know you and your work.
- a statement of purpose (if you are applying for a University Fellowship).
University Fellowship
Awarded by the Graduate School, this fellowship provides a yearly stipend of $15,500 plus tuition. For entering students, the primary criteria are exceptionally high GRE scores and an outstanding academic record; for continuing students the determinant is superior academic performance in the program.
Linguistics Department Teaching Assistantship
The Linguistics Department awarded eighteen teaching assistantships in 2005-2006. In addition to providing a monthly salary, this award also provides tuition reimbursement. Each non-U.S. graduate student must take and pass the English Oral Proficiency Assessment and attend a two-day orientation program in order to be eligible to accept a teaching assistantship.

Graduate Research Assistantship
Graduate research assistantships are sometimes available from faculty members whose research projects are supported by grants from outside agencies. Discretion in making such appointments rests with the individual faculty members. The primary criterion will be qualification for doing the kind of work required.
Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship
U.S. citizens are eligible to apply for these U.S. Government-sponsored fellowships for the study of certain languages. A FLAS fellowship pays for tuition and fees and provides a stipend of approximately $10,000 per academic year. Contact the appropriate center directly for information and applications.
- Center for Middle Eastern Studies: Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and Hebrew
- Center for Asian Studies: Hindi, Japanese, Chinese, Sanskrit, and Malayalam
- Institute of Latin American Studies: Portuguese and Native South and MesoAmerican languages
Teaching Assistantships in Other Departments
There are four departments that often employ graduate students to teach beginning language classes:
- French and Italian
- Spanish and Portuguese
- Asian Studies
- Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures
- Philosophy
The Departments of Asian Studies and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (formerly Oriental and African Languages and Literatures) do not usually hire first-year international students as teaching assistants.
The Department of Rhetoric & Writing employs graduate students to teach beginning rhetoric and composition courses. The Departments of Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering hire teaching assistants to grade for technical writing courses. Some of these departments require previous teaching experience and a M.A. (or equivalent) in the relevant discipline.
