Prof. David Beaver has been awarded a new three-year $349,676 grant from the National Science Foundation, for a project entitled "Modeling Discourse and Social Dynamics in Authoritarian Regimes." This project is a collaboration with Prof. James Pennebaker of UT's Department of Psychology, and with researchers at Cornell University (the lead group) and the University of Memphis. The total budget across the three sites is in excess of $1.5 million. The project will employ computational techniques to analyze corpora of texts in a range of languages, with the aim of better understanding the ways in which the language people use reflects their psychological states and social relationships.
