Congratulations to Ben Hansen, Jinung Kim, Qiuana Lopez, and Jessica White-Sustaita, who have completed their dissertations and will officially receive their doctorates on May 19.

Bonnie Krejci will receive her master’s degree from us and will then be joining the doctoral program in linguistics at Stanford in the Fall.  We’ll miss her!

Qiuana Lopez will be heading west to Santa Barbara to become a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California Santa Barbara.

Kristin van Engen has been a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer in our department and in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. In the Fall she’ll become a postdoctoral fellow in the Linguistics program at Washington University St. Louis.

Eric Campbell has been awarded a Named Continuing Fellowship from the Graduate School. He is also a finalist for the University Coop’s Excellence in Graduate Research Award that will be announced by the Graduate School on May 16. The department has awarded Continuing Fellowships to Ana Paula Brandao and Daniel Smith.

Dan Velleman has been awarded an NSF Dissertation Improvement Grant to investigate “Focus and Focus-Sensitivity in Kichee.”  His advisor (and the PI on this award) is David Beaver.

Three awards from the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme are in the works; those awards will go to Lynn Hou and Kate Mesh, to Daniel Valle Arevalo, and to Pattie Epps, all for work on indigenous languages of Latin America.

Our undergraduate majors have all sorts of accomplishments. Derya Kadipasaoglu is a Dean’s Distinguished Graduate for 2012. Three of our majors, Michelle Bucholtz, Bobbi Duncan, and Eric Nikolaides, have received Unrestriced Endowed Presidential Scholarships for this coming academic year. Graduate school beckons for a number of our graduates from this year and last, including Samantha Gordon, Derya Kadipasaoglu, Amanda Meeks, Grace Momberger, and Udelle Robinson.
