Giving

Born out of the activism of the civil rights movement, the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) was established in June 1970, with Professor Américo Paredes as one of its principal founders and first director. CMAS is the foundation upon which the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies (MALS) was formed. MALS is a unit within the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin.

The mission of MALS is to serve Texas and the nation as a leader in the intellectual development of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies. The establishment of MALS represents an institutional recognition of the importance of the Mexican American and Latino people in the history, culture, and society of the United States.

Faculty and students affiliated with MALS have worked to enhance our understanding of the cultural, educational, political, and social dimensions of the Mexican American experience, as well as the broader Latino experience, and to strengthen the presence of Mexican Americans and other Latinos in the intellectual terrain, both within and beyond U.S. borders.

Based on our mission and record of achievement, MALS chair and faculty have developed a strategic plan that identifies three priority items in need of support:

  • Undergraduate Scholarships
  • Faculty Development
  • Public Programming

We welcome the opportunity to meet with individuals who would like to learn more about MALS.  Please contact the department at (512) 471-4557 to discuss how you can become a valued supporter of the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies at The University of Texas at Austin.

How to Give

Supporting MALS can be done in a variety of ways.  You can participate in UT’s Annual Giving campaign; consider making a planned gift; or offering an outright gift. These giving programs often carry special tax incentives and can support the development of an endowment. Please visit the development and alumni relations web site for the College of Liberal Arts for more information. If you do consider making a gift, please indicate that you are supporting the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.

The College of Liberal Arts has established the Dean’s Circle giving society for supporters who wish to make an unrestricted gift that can be directed to a specific program or initiative. Dean’s Circle members can participate at various gift levels and are invited to a number of special events hosted by the College of Liberal Arts. You may contact (512) 232-5606 or transforminglives@mail.dla.utexas.edu for more information.  If you do consider becoming a member of the Dean’s Circle, please indicate that you are supporting the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies.
