Mediterranean Crossroads | Program Requirements
Requisites
Applicants must be students at the University of Texas at Austin. Students in all UT departments and colleges (including graduate students) are eligible to apply. Undergraduates must have completed 30 hours of course work at the time of application. Graduate credit for the conference course is available.
No previous background in area studies is required. Although helpful on a practical level, knowledge of Arabic, French, Italian, or Latin is not required for admission to the program. All program events will be conducted in English.
Fee
Students are responsible for tuition and fees for all UT courses. The summer course requires a program fee of approximately $3,500 in addition to tuition.
The program fee covers:
- Round-trip airfare from the United States to Morocco and Sicily for the program*
- Accommodation in a shared room
- Meals as follows: breakfast daily; lunch will be included on days when events are scheduled. On occasion, dinner may be included as part of a group event
- All admission fees to sites visited as part of a group activity
- Local transportation
- Tips to tour guides, drivers, hotel staff, and wait staff for group meals
* Due to the complex nature of the travel itinerary, students will be required to travel as a group for the duration of the program, including departure from and return to the United States. Alternately, students may choose to terminate their involvement in Rome at the conclusion of the program and will be responsible for making their own arrangements to return to the U.S.
Expenses not covered by the program fee include:
- Passport application fees;
- Visa fees (visas are not required for U.S. citizens; nationals of other countries should check with the appropriate embassies);
- Inoculations or medication needed for travel or personal medical conditions;
- Meals: dinner; lunch on free days;
- Admissions and fees for visits conducted outside of group activity;
- Personal expenditures, including telephone calls, Internet access fees, purchase of personal products and groceries, souvenirs, etc.;
- Tuition and fees at the University of Texas for a 3 credit hour summer course;
- Insurance (required by the University; a plan may be purchased through the C-GEO office)
The remaining costs of the program (airfare, local transportation, room and board while abroad, and admission charges to museums and events) will be covered by funds from the College of Liberal Arts and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
