After Progress: American Social Reform and European Socialism in the 20th Century

Author: Norman Birnbaum
Format: Book
Country of origin: USA
Description: Birnbaum, a Georgetown law school professor who writes for the New Left Review and the Nation (The Crisis of Industrial Society; etc.), traces the decline and fall of social reform in Europe and America. At the beginning of the 20th century, he says, folks both here and abroad were committed to reforming society, to reining in the excesses of capitalism and improving life for all. Of course, with the great reformers came strident reactionaries. Birnbaum shows, for example, that William Howard Taft railed against socialism, by which he meant anything restricting the market. Birnbaum traces the limitations of the reforming impulse in America, saying that the New Deal was basically a wash: it created Social Security, and FDR acknowledged that America is not a classless society. But the language of class never really raised its head again, Birnbaum says, and social reform ended in 1938. Birnbaum's discussion of the post-WWII welfare state is provocative: the welfare model, he says, is preferable to unchecked capitalism. But at the same time that Europe and America embraced the welfare state, they also experienced a rising standard of living, and Birnbaum wonders if decades of social reform were destined to culminate simply in a consumerist orgy. Finally, he takes the United States to task, observing that America has the grossest economic inequalities, and the weakest left, of any industrialized country. Birnbaum offers a readable, if occasionally overgeneralized and superficial, history, and an inspiring call to arms for readers who still hope to see social and economic reform.

She lived for several decades after Mohammed's death and was deeply involved in the turmoil of political conflict and civil war that shaped the early Muslim state. Allah Made Me Funny: Live in Concert

Format: DVD
Country of origin: USA
Description:

This landmark concert film follows three acclaimed comedians on stage and off as they lift the veil to reveal the humorous truth of what it's really like to be Muslim in America. Mo Amer, Azhar Usman, and Preacher Moss poke fun at themselves, their communities, government, human nature, and the tricky predicament of living in post 9/11 America. Featuring music of rising indie scene artists, Allah Made Me Funny: Live in Concert is rollicking good fun and gives people of all cultural backgrounds an opportunity to laugh hard, drop their guard, and open their minds. Not rated.

Unlike most adult-oriented comedy filmes, the language here is clean (the comedians are similar in theme and tone to Christian stand-up comics) and safe for all ages (with note: Preacher Moss's set includes a running joke about his deeply Christian family mistakenly thinking that he was gay when he had, in fact, converted to Islam). Not much background knowledge is required, although it is assumed that viewers are somewhat familiar with Islam to get some of the "in" jokes.

But while Atiyah is studying at the great university in Fez, Halima is lost in a sandstorm. Rescued by an enemy tribe, she is told that she must marry their powerful sheikh and live in his harem--never to see her people again. Halima does what she can to resist, but she has no choice. In three moons' time she will become the youngest wife of the cruel and greedy Raisulu--unless Atiyah can find her. But where in the vast sea of desert can he begin his search for his beloved?" An American Bookseller Pick of the Lists. Book Links Editors' Choice of 1996. From the School Library Journal Review: "There are fascinating glimpses of everyday life here: Beduin women gathering camel hair for rugs, university students arguing in the classroom, men bursting forth into poetry as they come together for horse trading and camel racing. While telling this romantic tale, Temple also touches upon conflicts within the larger society, e.g., the Beduin way of life versus that of the educated urban mullahs, and the struggle between Islam and Christianity. As in Suzanne Staples's Shabanu (Knopf, 1989), this story shows young people striving to reconcile their individual hopes and dreams with the demands of a traditional society."

Chicken with Plums

Author: Marjane Satrapi
Format: Graphic Novel
Description: From the Publisher's Weekly review: "The question of what makes a life worth living has rarely been posed with as much poignancy and ambition as it is in Satrapi's dazzling new effort. Satrapi's talent for distilling complex personal histories into richly evocative vignettes made Persepolis a bestseller. Here she presents us with the story of her great-uncle Nasser Ali Khan, one of Iran's most revered musicians, who takes to bed after realizing that he'll never be able to find an instrument to replace his beloved, broken tar. Eight days later, he's dead. These final eight days, which we're taken through one by one, make up the bulk of this slim volume. While waiting for death, Nasser Ali is visited by family, memories and hallucinations. Because everything is being filtered through Satrapi's formidable imagination, we are also treated to classical Persian poetry, bits of history, folk stories, as well as an occasional flash forward into lives Nasser Ali will never have a chance to see. Each episode is illustrated with Satrapi's characteristic, almost childlike drawings, which take on the stark expressiveness of block prints. Clear and emotive, they bring surprising force and humor to this stunning tribute to a life whose worth can be measured in the questions it leaves."

As a result, Islam has been divided in its response to the modern world - admiring and imitating its technology and science, while remaining deeply suspicious of its cultural values and democratic institutions.

Teenage Refugees from Iran Speak Out

Author: Gina Strazzabosco
Format: Book
Description: This slim book begins with a history of Iran up to 1993. In the chapters that follow, seven teenagers who were born there speak out about the circumstances that caused them and their families to seek asylum as political refugees in the United States. They address similar themes of displacement, fear, assimilation into American schools and culture, and fierce devotion to family and their homeland. The four-to-five page narratives are interesting and well written. Teacher guidance is recommended to handle background material, especially since documentation is weak. Black-and-white photos appear throughout, but their captions are often vague, not pinpointing time and place. One describes an Iranian protest, yet the signs the individuals are carrying are written in Italian. Editorial notes and clarification of information and statistics are lacking. Janet Bode's [em]New Kids in Town[/em] (Scholastic, 1991) takes a similar approach, but is a better book. [em]Teenage Refugees[/em] does, however, raise interesting questions and introduces students to the Baha'i faith. Some color photos. Contains an index, map, glossary, and bibliography.

Unsettled: the problem of loving Israel

Author: Marc Aronson
Format: Book
Country of origin: USA
Description: "I love Israel," this book begins -- but is followed by 183 pages of footnote. In this deeply personal book, Marc Aronson explores the history of Israel, from the beginning of the Zionist movement to the birth of Israel as a state in 1948, to the intense conflicts over Israel, the Palestinians, and the Jewish settlements of today. Aronson ponders questions with no easy answers: can a religious state also be a democratic state? Is Israel the victim or the aggressor? Do modern states have moral obligation? What kind of Israel should exist? Wisely, Aronson offers no definitive answers to any of these questions (although his own perspective is made clear).
