Teacher Travel Abroad

CMES occasionally sponsors and organizes short-term educational programs for K-12 educators to travel to the Middle East. These are educational programs: groups are accompanied by a staff and/or faculty member who provide background lectures and provide context for group activities and site visits.
Spring Break in Egypt 2010
Bridge Across Civilizations (Turkey)
The Center or Middle Eastern Studies, in partnership with the Institute of Interfaith Dialog, organized a ten-day study tour of Turkey, "Bridge Across Civilizations," in the summer of 2009. This program will be repeated in the summer of 2010.
For the 2009 program, the cost-per-participant was $2,500, which included round-trip airfare from Texas to Istanbul, internal travel in Turkey, shared accommodations, and full board. The program itinerary may be downloaded here. We do not expect significant change in the cost or details for the 2010 program. Space preference will be given to educators who teach 6th grade world cultures, world history, or world geography. Information and forms will be available in the spring of 2010—check this page for updates.
Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad and Group Projects Abroad
Since 2004, CMES Outreach has worked with the Fulbright-Hays educator programs in the U.S. Department of Education. Two programs bring U.S. educators abroad for short-term (4-week) summer study programs and related projects.
Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad (SA) provide short-term study and travel seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities for the purpose of improving their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. CMES organized the pre-departure orientation for three programs: Turkey and Cyprus in 2004, Morocco in 2008, and Turkey in 2009.

Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) provide grants to educational institutions to support overseas projects in training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies for teachers, students, and faculty engaged in a common endeavor. CMES has organized two seminars and curriculum development projects through the GPA program: Turkey in 1990 and Egypt in 2005.
