ARA 380C • 4- Adv Readings In Arabic II

This course, which is a sequel to Advanced Readings in Arabic I, aims at providing students with further skills of Reading Comprehension at the Advanced to Advanced Plus levels (on the ACTFL scale) and helping them gain a deeper understanding of Arab culture through texts. Readings for the course consist exclusively of authentic materials on various contemporary topics in the humanities and the social sciences, and various genres including commentaries, essays, short stories, plays, biographies, articles etc., reflecting narrative, expository, descriptive and argumentative styles, and of materials from medieval Arabic sources. The students are expected to present and to discuss orally the materials read, using cohesive paragraph-length discourse, to write outlines, paraphrases, summaries, and compositions, based on the materials read, to review orally in class and present written reports on at least two books in their field of interest, and to demonstrate an Advanced/Advanced Plus level of comprehension of texts by performing tasks of increasing complexity, including making inferences.
Homework and Class Participation: 50% Tests and take home: 50%
Abboud, Peter, Abbas al-Tonsi, and Aman Attieh, Come Let's Read With the Arabs. Advanced Level. Texts from various sources, including major literary works, both contemporary and medieval, will also be assigned.
