Course Description
PRS 312L is an intermediate Persian language course for students who have completed more than a year of university Persian study or its equivalent. PRS 312L aims primarily to improve student proficiency in reading Persian and secondarily to improve Persian listening and speaking skills. The course leads to Third-year Persian courses (PRS 329) and/or to student proficiency in maintaining and improving Persian skills through self-study. By the end of PRS 312L, students can enjoy reading Persian newspapers and magazines, listening to Persian radio, and watching Persian television and Iranian movies. "Enjoy" doesn't mean understanding everything, but rather understanding enough to make a reading or listening experience meaningful and fun. PRS 312L course sessions deal with lesson modules from M. Hillmanns Persian Listening: A Self-Study and Classroom Guide (2005) and Persian Grammar: Topics Modules (2006, draft manuscript). Students purchase course materials as announced and needed, in the form of photocopied handouts, from Paradigm Books (407 W. 24th Street). Before the second course session, students should have a three-ring binder for storing course handouts. Persian texts in syllabus units are recorded on CDs available for gratis copying by students.
Grading Policy
Course grades are based on class participation, including review quizzes on material covered in class (20%), homework assignments (50%), and a review test on the third-to-last day of class (30%).
