Course Description
This course surveys the works of modern Iranian writers of fiction from early 20th century to the present. Starting with the Travel Memoirs of Ebrahim Beyg and then the work of the father of modern Persian fiction, Mohammad Ali Jamalzadeh, we will study the short stories and novels of such prominent writers as Sadeg Hedayat, Sadeq Chubak, Jalal Al-e Ahmad, Ebrahim Golestan, Simin Daneshver, Hushang Golshiri, Mahmud Dowlatabadi and others. We will examine the development of Persian fiction and the contributions of each writer to various fictional genres.

Class participation, 10%; class reports on specific works or writers, 30%; two analytical term papers, 60%
