ARA 325K • Egyptian Arabic I

Course Description

This is an elementary course of the Egyptian Arabic dialect. The course introduces students to the grammatical structures, pronunciation and vocabulary of Egyptian Arabic. Students will learn how to conduct conversations in different everyday situations such as introducing oneself, chatting with friends, shopping, ordering food at a restaurant, asking for directions etc. They will also develop sensitivity with regard to the culturally appropriate ways of using the language in different situations. The students will be able to listen to and comprehend interactions between native speakers of Egyptian Arabic on familiar topics. They will also be able to read and comprehend materials written in Egyptian Arabic such as advertisements, comic strips, movie posters, song lyrics, plays etc. The course will adopt a communicative approach to language teaching where pair-work and group-work activities will be used frequently.

Grading Policy

They will be determined by individual instructor.
