Course Description
The Book of Esther is one of the five Scrolls in the Hebrew Bible. It is named after Queen Esther, the heroine of this miraculous story. When Queen Vashti fell into disgrace for disobeying King Ahasuerus of Persia, Esther was among the beautiful virgins selected to be presented to the King, who was struck by her beauty, and made her queen. When Prime Minister Haman contemplated the extermination of the Jews in Persia, Esther interceded for her Jewish people and saved them. This miraculous redemption is celebrated as the Holiday of Purim at which time the Scroll of Esther is read in the synagogues. We will read the text in Hebrew and interpret it and discuss it in English.
