MES 390 • QUR-ANIC EXEGESIS
6:00 PM-9:00 PM
In this graduate seminar, we will explore issues related to the Qur'anic exegetical tradition (tafsir). Topics covered will include the history of exegesis as well as classical principles and methods of exegesis (hermeneutics). We will read extensively from primary texts (exegetical works), both in English translation as well as in the original Arabic, from a variety of doctrinal and sectarian perspectives. Readings will also include secondary scholarship in the field of Qur'anic studies (predominantly in English). Approximately 25-30% of course readings will be in Arabic.
Weekly research notes (4% ea.=40%), final paper (35%), class presentations/participation (25%)
Arabic tafsir material (on reserve); course packet.
