Course Description

This course will present an overview of contemporary Arab cinema, exploring the way this cinema reflects the dynamics of change in modern Arab societies. The course will be based on 1) weekly screenings of movies representing different periods, genres (e.g., comedy, drama, musical, war), and Arab countries, 2) discussion of the movies in Arabic and English, and 3) readings in both Arabic and English on the history and evolution of Arab cinema and the social, political, cultural, and artistic factors that have shaped it.

Grading Policy

Class participation 20%, Tests: 30%, Final Project 30%, Homework: 20%
