Course Description
This seminar explores the formation of Lebanon in the 20th Century and traces the transformations it has experienced culturally and socially since its creation. We will examine issues such as identity, language, and religious & cultural diversity as they have been reflected in the writings of Lebanese political and cultural ideologues, novelists, poets, journalists and academics in the last hundred years. Seminar discussion is conducted entirely in Arabic, with readings and writings in both Arabic and English.
Grading Policy
Preparation & class participation 25%, weekly reaction papers to readings 25%, class presentations 20%, final research paper 30%.
