Course Description

This is the sequel to Arabic 508. As such, its purpose is to build and further develop students' proficiency and communication in Modern Standard Arabic (Modern Fus-ha) in the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading (both oral and comprehension) , and writing, and a growing familiarity with Arab culture. These two courses will lay the foundation for rapid acquisition of the language for more advanced work in MSA and for studying the Qur'an, Pre-Islamic and Islamic Arabic literature. Students will be expected to perform specified tasks and outcomes, acquire the basic vocabulary, understand the general meaning and the who, what, where, when, and why of assigned reading passages, report orally on learned content and role-play these texts and passages, read aloud and at normal speed the assigned basic texts, write meaningful simple sentences on content of these texts and create and produce new contexts and combinations with old and new vocabulary structures, and pronounce sounds, words (including inter-word liaisons) and word endings (where they are crucial for liaison purposes), and utterances, and use the appropriate vocabulary and expressions, forms, and structures, correctly and in such as way as to be understood by a native speaker using Fus-ha. By the end of this course, the majority of students should reach a level of Intermediate Low to Mid, according to ACTFL proficiency rating.

Grading Policy

There are no make-ups for tests unless students can provide a medical report or other legitimate excuse. To pass in this course (a grade of D) or obtain credit, a student must obtain a numerical average grade of 70% or above. Assessment of students' performance is based on the following activities and distributions: Participation, 25 %; Homework assignments (satisfactory and punctual), 25%; Tests and quizzes (in-class and/or take-home), 30 %; Computer lab work, 20 %.
