This course, which is a sequel to Advanced Readings I, aims at providing qualified students with further skills in Reading Comprehesion In Modern Standard Arabic at the Advanced to Advanced Plus (on the ACTFL scale) and to help them acquire a broad understanding of Arab culture through texts. Readings for the course consist exclusively of authentic materials on various contemporary topics in the humanities and social sciences and various genres including commentaries, essays, short stories, biographies, journal and magazine articles etc., and reflect narrative, expository, descriptive and argumentative modes, and of materials from medieval Arabic sources. Students are expected to present and discuss orally the materials read, using complex sentences in a paragraph length discourse, to write outlines, paraphrases, summaries, and compositions, based on the materials read, and to demonstrate comprehension of texts of increasing levels of complexity and sophistication and make inferences from them. In addition to materials assigned to the class, students read books in their own field of interest and meet with the instructor individually to discuss them.
