Course Description

Students will read the Arabic novel Men in the Sun over the period of the semester and engage in language proficiency development activities based on themes from the novel. In addition to the novel, students will read current articles related to themes from the novel. The curriculum and materials are designed to support second language learners already at an advanced level of language proficiency to develop their language proficiency toward the Superior level. Students will explore cultural issues that emerge from the novel and discuss and write about those issues relative to their own culture and lives or globally; improve the fluency and accuracy of their oral and written expression; practice and improve their ability to "narrate and describe in major time frames with good control of aspect" and "sustain communication by using connected discourse of paragraph length and substance."
