Course Description

This course introduces students to the intellectual and cultural issues that contemporary Arab societies are grappling with: gender roles, minority rights, democracy, patriarchy, modernity and Westernization. Authors include Hisham Sharabi, Halim Barakat, Fatima Mernissi, Nawal Saadawi, Muhammad Abid al-Jabiri, and Burhan Ghalyun. Readings, papers, and discussion in Arabic.

Grading Policy

Preparation & class participation 20% Leading one discussion session 5% 10 Weekly reaction papers in Arabic 40% Contribution to discussion board 10% Final Paper 25%
