Course Description

Open to non-departmental majors only. This semester-long course is not intended as a comprehensive survey of art history. Rather, it is intended to help students learn how to look at art, and to raise their awareness of historical and cultural factors that affect the ways they look. In separate segments, the course introduces abbreviated canons of artistic traditions in Europe, Central Eurasia and India, and China from the medieval to early modern periods. Between segments of the course that introduce these traditions independently, short interlude segmentscultural exchange.

Grading Policy

Class Participation 20% Short Quizzes 25% Midterm 25% Final Exam 30%


There are two course packets. One serves as a reference survey, but with a more even treatment of the various traditions we will study in this class than is available in any existing survey text. The other is a collection of articles.
