MES 322K • Geography of the Middle East

Course Description

The Middle East has long fascinated those interested in the complex patterns of interaction between society, culture, and environment. More recently the regions growing economic and political influence in world affairs has made it imperative that we obtain a better understanding of the problems and aspirations of the peoples of the Middle East. This course will provide a geographical introduction to those forces (both physical and human) that have helped shape the contemporary Middle Eastern landscape. The course will deal with the dynamic nature of the regions resource base (particularly land and water) and with traditional and modern practices of resource management. Of particular concern will be the demographic, cultural, political, and economic forces that are transforming the relationship of people to space and place. Subject to change without notice...

Grading Policy

Two hour-long exams (50% total), 3 or 4 quizzes (25% total), A short research project/presentation (15%) Attendance (10%)
