MES 325 • Jewish Communities of the Middle East and North Africa
12:00 PM-1:00 PM
The course covers Jewish history and culture in non-Western countries. Whether they are referred to as 'Sephardi', 'Eastern', 'Oriental', or 'Afro-Asian', those communities, some of which date back to biblical times, maintained their distinct customs and religious traditions through centuries of turbulence. The course will follow Jewish life in those countries, from prosperity and cultural revival in the Golden Age of Medieval Spain, to the mass exodus and relocation of the 20th century, mostly to Israel.
