The Language of the Hebrew Documents from Judaea
Uri Mor (Ben-Gurion University, Israel)

This talk will address the corpus of the epigraphic Hebrew documents from the Judaean desert that were composed between the first and the second Jewish revolts (66-135 CE). The linguistic nature of the corpus will be examined from three aspects: its uniformity, its dialectal affiliation, and its grammar. Based on a thorough study of the documents, it will be argued that the language of this corpus is homogenous, relatively closer to Mishnaic Hebrew and reflects a living dialect of Hebrew, rather than a mix of Aramaic and Hebrew.
