The post-independence state in the MENA region has had to respond to multiple economic, political and socio-cultural crises. One means of doing so involves revising or reinterpreting key elements of the national narrative. Using the case of Algeria, Brand will examine how and why key elements of its national narrative have been changed or reinterpreted over time to respond to the demands of state consolidation or regime maintenance.
