Gölgeler ve Suretler (Shadows and Faces, 2010), director: Derviş Zaim; 116 min
Turkish Cypriot filmmaker Derviş Zaim’s most recent directorial effort, in which he tackles the inter-communal violence his homeland experienced in the 1960s, dominated the awards at the 2011 Ankara International Film Festival, winning seven honors, including best film and best director, at the festival’s closing ceremony. “Shadows and Faces” recounts the tragedy Turkish Cypriots experienced in 1963 through the story of a father and daughter.
