This course explores the Arabic novel from the perspective of one of the Arab world’s most accomplished authors. The course is organized thematically and focuses on questions such as the writer’s role in society, writing as a form of memory, the ethical implications of writing, writing in exile, and issues of literary translation. In addition to theoretically discussions of these issues, we will also analyze them through the lens of the novels and writings of Huda Barakat. Works to be read include Tiller of Waters, Stone of Laughter, The Disciples of Passion, My Master and My Lover, and Kingdom of this Earth.
This course will be conducted entirely in Arabic.
Preparation and participation in class discussions, writing assignments, final paper.
