Biography

It is with great sorrow that we report that Hafez Farmayan, Professor Emeritus of History and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2015.

Professor Farmayan was a pioneer in the scholarly study of Qajar Iran and among the first historians to point out the significant social and cultural change taking place during the Qajar period. Professor Farmayan was born in 1927 and was sent to the United States for his education by his father, Prince Abdolhoseyn Farmanfarma, in 1944. He received his B.A. in 1949 and his M.A. in 1950 in history from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from Georgetown University in 1953.

Before coming to The University of Texas, Professor Farmayan taught at the University of Tehran, where he also served as the director of the University of Tehran Press, and at Columbia University. His significant scholarly contributions in Persian and English include The Beginnings of Modernization in Iran: The Policies and Reforms of Shah Abbas I; The Foreign Policy of Iran: A Historical Analysis, 559 B.C.-A.D. 1971; A Shi'ite Pilgrimage to Mecca, 1885-1886: The Safarnameh of Mirza Mohammad Hosayn Farahani (with Elton Daniel) and the editing of several important nineteenth-century travel memoirs.
