This content based course deals with the city of Cairo and provides students with a comprehensive picture of the fascinating city through reading, watching, listening to, writing and discussing different genres and texts. All discussions in class will be conducted in Egyptian Arabic, but readings, visual and audio material will feature variations of both Egytian and Standard Arabic. Students will discover the different faces of the city featured in biographies, autobiographies, short stories, excerpts of novels, articles, reports, talks, poems and explore some places that have played a role in forming the city and its identity. In addition, they will examine the relations of people to the squares, malls, streets, cinemas, malls, classical and modern coffee shops, hotels, parks, and so on.   Text(s): Excerpts of novels, books, memoirs, articles, short stories that will be posted on Blackboard. Examples of reading materials: Audio and video material links will be posted on blackboard.   Grading: Class participation and attendance 25% Weekly assignments (reflections and reactions to the texts) 25% Comparative paper 15% Final project 20% Presenttions 15%
