Biography
At the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, Anthony "Antoine" Edwards is pursuing a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, focusing on Arabic Sociolinguistics and Arab Intellectual History. His primary research examines the function of the contemporary Arab Majma's (academies) during the Nahdah and the role of the local intelligentsia during the period. Before coming to the University of Texas at Austin, Antoine earned both his A.B. and M.A. in Arabic from Georgetown University. While completing his undergraduate studies, he studied in Egypt twice and Yemen. Upon completion of his M.A., he received a Fulbright Grant to Syria to conduct research at the Arabic Language Majma' in Damascus. In addition to research, Antoine enjoys teaching Arabic and is always energized to apply the newest methodologies in pedagogy.
