Biography
Ryan Fan is an M.A. candidate in The Department of Middle Eastern Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. He began obsessing over Arabic after leaving behind German, Old Norse, Scottish Gaelic, and Mechanical Engineering. Upon graduating from Cornell University in 2010 with a B.A. in Linguistics and Mathematics, Ryan moved to Egypt to study Arabic in Alexandria on a Fulbright Arabic Language Grant from 2010 to 2011 and in Cairo on a Center for Arabic Study Abroad fellowship from 2011 to 2012.
His academic interests include native speaker perceptions of Arabic, language contact, leveling and accommodation phenomena, Egyptian Sign Language, and Arabic pedagogy. Ryan works as a Teaching Assistant for first-year intensive Arabic. His other interests include chimes and carillons, Balkan folk dancing, houseboats, bread baking, and rock climbing.
