Ryan Fan is an M.A.-to-PhD candidate in The Department of Middle Eastern Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. Upon graduating from Cornell University in 2010 with a B.A. in Linguistics and Mathematics, Ryan moved to Egypt to study Arabic in Alexandria on a Fulbright Arabic Language Grant from 2010 to 2011 and in Cairo on a Center for Arabic Study Abroad fellowship from 2011 to 2012.
His academic interests include native speaker linguistic perceptions in Arabic and Persian, language contact, linguistic leveling and accommodation phenomena, Egyptian Sign Language, and Arabic pedagogy. Ryan has worked as a Teaching Assistant for first- and second-year intensive Arabic. His other interests include chimes and carillons, folk guitar, houseboats, bread baking, and rock climbing.
