Ryan Fan



Ryan Fan is a PhD student in The Department of Middle Eastern Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. After graduating from Cornell University in 2010 with a B.A. in Linguistics and Mathematics, Ryan moved to Egypt to study Arabic in Alexandria on a Fulbright Grant (2010-2011) and in Cairo on a CASA fellowship (2011-2012). 

His academic interests include Egyptian Sign Language, language contact, leveling and accommodation, and Arabic pedagogy. Ryan has worked as a Teaching Assistant (first, second, and third year Arabic; Fall 2012-Summer 2014), and as an Assistant Instructor (Summer 2015-Spring 2016). 

His other interests include chimes and carillons, folk guitar, houseboats, bread baking, and rock climbing.
