Fellowships and Scholarships

Ann Grabhorn-Friday Endowed Presidential Fellowship in Middle Eastern Studies

The Ann Grabhorn-Friday Fellowship is offered annually to graduate students in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies’ master’s program with a demonstrated long-term interest in the Middle East. Preference is given to female students whose studies focus on the Arab world. Awards may be used for language or area studies at UT or at an approved overseas institution.

Eligibility: CMES students in good standing at UT with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or students admitted without conditions
Stipend: $3,500-$7,500 per academic year

Dan C. Danciger Scholarship in Hebrew Studies

Separate application required

The Danciger Scholarship is awarded annually to students demonstrating achievement in and commitment to Hebrew studies. Award recipients must enroll in at least one Hebrew course in the semester following the notification of award. Students interested in the Danciger Scholarship should complete the Hebrew Studies Program Scholarship Application and submit all required materials to DMES by October 1.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students in good standing at UT
Stipend: $100-$1,000

Middle Eastern Studies Graduate Travel Fellowship

Separate application required.

CMES offers travel fellowships to help defray the costs such as airfare, lodging, and registration fees associated with delivering conference presentations. Students must submit an application form, abstract of the paper to be presented, and documentation of the acceptance of the paper by the conference organizers. Students may request multiple travel fellowships throughout the year, but funding limits may apply.

Eligibility: Graduate students in good standing at UT whose work focuses on the Middle East
Stipend:  $100-$950

Middle Eastern Studies Internship Award

Separate application required.

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies is pleased to offer support to students participating in unpaid or underpaid summer internship programs. The awards are designed to help defray the costs of travel, accommodations, and living expenses related to completion of the internship, as well as tuition for enrollment in a Middle Eastern Studies internship course.

Preference will be given to students completing a degree in Middle Eastern studies or a closely related field and to students who have already been offered an internship. Preference will also be given for internships conducted in the Middle East and internship with well-known, established agencies, organizations, and corporations.

All application materials must be submitted by April 15.

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students in good standing at UT who are eligible to register for MES 383 (graduate) or MES 370 (undergraduate)
Stipend: Up to $5,000

University Preemptive Fellowship

These prestigious awards are offered by the Graduate School to attract top-quality graduate students to UT. Applicants who are deemed to be in the top ten percent of national peer groups as measured by GRE scores and grade point average may be nominated for the award.

Eligibility: Incoming graduate students nominated by the department
Stipend: $15,000 plus a one-time health insurance stipend of $1,119; tuition assistance for up to nine hours of course credit

University Continuing Fellowships

The Continuing Fellowship is awarded to graduate students with a well-defined research project based on major accomplishments since entering the Graduate School. Financial need is considered in award decisions.

Eligibility: Graduate students in good standing at UT nominated by the department
Stipend: $18,000 plus a one-time health insurance stipend of $1,119; tuition assistance for up to nine hours of course credit

 

Graduate School Fellowships

Students nominated for, but not awarded the Continuing Fellowship will be considered for this award.

Eligibility: Graduate students in good standing at UT nominated for the Continuing Fellowship
Stipend: $3,000 applied toward tuition and fees and eligibility for resident tuition rates

David Bruton, Jr., Graduate Fellowship

Established by the UT Systems Board of Regents for the benefit of UT-Austin in September 1991. Students nominated for, but not awarded the Continuing Fellowship will be considered for this award.

Eligibility: Graduate students in good standing at UT nominated for the Continuing Fellowship
Stipend: $1,000 and eligibility for resident tuition rates
