Battalion

Welcome Aboard to the University of Texas Naval ROTC Battalion. My name is Midshipman First Class Noah Freedman, and I will be the Battalion Commanding Officer for the Fall 2023 semester. I am privileged to lead this battalion into the next academic year and welcome all our new students as they embark on their college and naval journey. The University of Texas at Austin is a top public university in the world, and achieving admission into this university is no small accomplishment. Congratulations on your admittance and this milestone in your career.

UT NROTC has commissioned some of the best Naval and Marine Corps officers since 1940, and by choosing to join this program, you decided to follow in the footsteps of admirals, generals, and hundreds of company-grade officers who decided to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Today’s military is comprised of less than one percent of the American population. Your decision to join our battalion makes you a part of that esteemed community.

As a Naval ROTC midshipman, you will deal with pressure unbeknownst to the average college student. You will learn to lead during difficult times, be challenged physically and academically, and face ethical and moral dilemmas that will test your character. All these challenges are put in place to prepare you to become an officer in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. An officer assumes tremendous responsibility, and the Department of Defense expects us to do this mission well and to excel. Think of your decisions and choices here as an introduction to the types of decisions you will make in the fleet.

Throughout your journey in UT NROTC, you will be surrounded by excellent leaders, some of whom may have prior enlisted experience or may be in your class. Learn from these people. Emulate the type of leader you most want to be. Dedicate yourself to integrity, your commission, and an unrelenting desire to help others. Dedicate yourself to honor, courage, and commitment, and you will be destined for success.

And, of course, Hook ‘em Horns and Texas Navy, Texas Fight!
