Biography

Captain John G. Eden, a native of Hurst, Texas, graduated from Texas A&M University in 1985 with Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Aerospace Engineering.  He was commissioned in October 1986 via the Aviation Officer Candidate School program.

Captain Eden attended flight school in Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in December 1987.  He reported to VF-124 at NAS Miramar, California, for training in the F-14A Tomcat and upon completion was assigned to the “Screaming Eagles” of VF-51. He made one WESTPAC deployment and PACEX onboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70), and then switched to the USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) for an “Around the Horn” cruise. During his assignment to VF-51 he attended the Navy Fighter Weapons School, TOPGUN, at Miramar.

Following his tour with VF-51, Captain Eden was assigned to TOPGUN, but left after six months due to his selection to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Maryland. He graduated with Class 104 in December 1993, and reported to the Naval Weapons Test Squadron, Point Mugu, California, where he
was assigned as the F-14B Upgrade Project Officer.

Following transition to the F-14D at VF-101 in Oceana, Virginia, Captain Eden reported to VF-2 at NAS Oceana in September 1997 for his Operational Department Head tour where he served as Maintenance Officer. With the “Bounty Hunters” he completed a WESTPAC/Arabian Gulf deployment onboard
USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) in 1999 in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH.

In April 2000, Captain Eden’s next assignment was to the United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany. He served as the Turkey and Greece Desk Officer within the Security Assistance branch of J4, and also was the lead for all major Tradeshows throughout Europe.

In January 2003, Captain Eden next reported as Executive Officer to VFA-122 in Lemoore, California, and completed his transition to the FA-18F Super Hornet. In August 2005, he then reported to VFA-2 for his tour as Executive Officer and subsequent Commanding Officer. With the “Bounty Hunters” he completed two WESTPAC deployments onboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72). Following his Commanding Officer tour, Captain Eden attended the United States Army Senior War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Class 2008. In October 2008, Captain Eden reported as Deputy Commander, Carrier Air Wing TWO and in August 2010 became Commander, Carrier Air Wing TWO. He led the Air Wing throughout the 2010-2011 WESTPAC deployment supporting Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and NEW DAWN.

In May 2012, Captain Eden assumed command of the Naval ROTC Unit at the University of Texas, Austin, where he serves as Chair, Department of Naval Science. He is the 27th Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Unit at the University of Texas at Austin. Captain Eden resides in Austin, Texas.
