Biography

Major Lucas A. Balke, a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, graduated from Marquette University in May 2003, earning a degree in Criminology and Law Studies.  He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant out of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Program and reported to Quantico, VA where he completed The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course.

In April 2004, Second Lieutenant Balke reported to 3d Battalion, 2d Marines.  In May of 2004, he deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.  There, he served as a Watch Officer at the US Embassy in Kabul.  In February 2005, Second Lieutenant Balke deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  There, he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander and was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant.  In July of 2006, First Lieutenant Balke again deployed to Iraq, this time as a Weapons Platoon Commander and Fire Support Team Leader.

In April 2007, First Lieutenant Balke reported to MCRD Parris Island.  There he served as a Series Commander and Company Executive Officer and was promoted to the rank of Captain.  He was then assigned as the Company Commander for Company B, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, where he served for 15 months.  Captain Balke completed his tour as the battalion’s Operations Officer.

In August 2010, Captain Balke reported to 1st Battalion, 1st Marines and assumed duties as Assistant Operations Officer.  In October 2010, he assumed command of Company A.  There, he deployed as the Mechanized Company Commander as part of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit during WESTPAC 11, completing Theater Security Cooperation Exercises in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.  In 2012, he again deployed as a Company Commander, this time as the battalion’s heliborne disruption force during Operation Enduring Freedom.  During this time, he led his company during four named heliborne disruption operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Major Balke is a graduate of Maneuver Captains Career Course and earned his Masters in Business Administration from Webster University.  His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (x2), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (x5), and the Combat Action Ribbon (x2).
