19th-Century German Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy offers comprehensive studies in 19th-century German philosophy, with a particularly strong focus on the period after German Idealism, including such figures as Schopenhauer, Marx, and Nietzsche. Complementary developments in 20th-century Continental philosophy, such as existentialism, post-structuralism, and aesthetics, are also covered. The Department has hosted several conferences on Nietzsche in recent years, which have brought leading scholars from the United States and abroad to Austin.
