Sarah Moss, University of Michigan: "Probabilistic Knowledge and Epistemic Contextualism"

Fri, January 25, 2013 • 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM • David L. Miller Conference Room, WAG 316

I defend a radical epistemological thesis: just as full beliefs can constitute knowledge, so can properties of your credence distribution. In the talk, I will introduce and motivate the claim that we have this sort of probabilistic knowledge, arguing that probabilistic knowledge helps us give a natural account of knowledge ascriptions embedding language of subjective uncertainty, as well as a simple diagnosis of probabilistic analogs of Gettier cases. In addition, I will discuss some skeptical puzzles about probabilistic knowledge, outlining our strategies for responding to the skeptic and comparing them with traditional strategies for responding to skepticism about knowledge.
