show description

The aim of the course is to attain a holistic grasp of Humeʼs philosophy. Philosophy courses are often divided by subject area (metaphysics, ethics, philosophy of mind, and so on). Hume wrote on all the main topics in philosophy, and our goal is not only to evaluate his individual contributions, but also to see how the views on various topics fit together. The class presupposes some knowledge of philosophy, but not of Humeʼs work.

LOGIC BIBLIOGRAPHIES

Rabus: Logische Literatur.pdf  This is an impressive bibliography from the 1860s, neglected for ca. a century (cf.my 1967 downloadable note in Publications). A reprint, annotated by me,  was scheduled by the publisher G. Olms (Germany), in the early 1960s. However, the project was withdrawn, quite justifiably, when Wilhelm Risse submitted (to the same publisher)  his great Bibliographia Logica (letter from Georg Olms, Sept 25, 1963).

Classes in the history of logic

Foreknowledge, bivalence, freedom

Locke's universal triangle: its undeserved fame

The meanings of "is" ( "the logic of being")

In the earlier period of modern logic it was emphasized that the so-called copula "is" boasts a variety of meanings (identity, predication, etc.). Frege's  idea was that ordinary language could and should be corrected (since it is not "natural" but "cultural", like a hammer). in the second half of the 20th c. the opposite view developed. A forceful supporter of this opposite view has been J.Hintikka.

PROJECTS

MONLORIUS: PREPARATION OF A NEW EDITION OF THIS IMPRESSIVE 16TH C. COMMENTARY ON ARISTOTLE'S LOGIC.

Johannis  Baptistae Monlorii Valentini ...

Paraphrasis, et  scholia in duos libros Priorum Analyticorum Aristotelis, vel de Ratiocinatione,

Graeco sermone in Latinum ab eo nunc denuo conversos

Accesserunt duo libelli eiusdem auctoris, unus de nomine Entelechia;

alter de Universis, quod in rebus constent sine mentis opera

VALENTIAE, 1569

Keckermann, a 1500s contemporary of Monlorius,  said that trying to write on Aristotelian logic after 1569, when Monlorius´ commentary on the Prior Analytics was published, was like attempting to write the Iliad after Homer...  Quo opere omnes veterum et recentium operas in illos Aristotelis ita superavit, ut qui iam post Monlorium in hac parte aliquid aggrediuntur, post Homerum Iliada scribere videantur, quoted by Risse,  Geschichte, p. 326. Nevertheless, Monlorius, like many others from his century (Keckermann included), have been victims of the poor philosophical historiography prevailing until not long ago: they are not exactly medieval, nor are they part of "modern philosophy" (Descartes-Locke-Kant). Thus, they have been largely ignored.
