Kantian Deontologism
I. Not a consequentialist theory—moral value depends on the will (end results cannot justify the means).
II. A good will is
intrinsically good—good in itself (not just instrumentally good).
III. Morality as a system of
categorical imperatives; no
‘ifs’ about them.
IV. Ultimately, just one
basic law: the Categorical Imperative (3 formulations)
Universal
Law formulation: Act only on
that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a
universal law. (p. 535, column 2)
A. Alternative version: formula of law of nature.
B. Similar to ‘golden rule’ (do
unto others…); see end of “Illustration 4.”
