This course will cover the epidemiology, diagnosis, etiology, associated features, and treatment of psychological and developmental disorders in childhood and adolescence. Relevant theories, research, and developmental considerations will also be reviewed.
This course will cover material related to infant mental health, disruptive behavior disorders, internalizing disorders, and developmental disorders. Classes will be structured to include both lecture and class discussion. Students are encouraged to bring questions and discussion points to class in order to promote in class discussion.
Course Assignments & Grades: Course grades are based on: one midterm, one non-cumulative final exam, four 2-page response papers, review paper outline/rough draft/final draft, class participation/attendance, and any extra credit points earned during the semester. Exams: There will be one midterm exam and one non-cumulative final exam on the days specified in the syllabus. Exams will include material presented in the assigned reading, class lectures, and any supplemental materials covered in class. Exams will consist of multiple choice, matching, true/false and short answer items. Response Papers: Students are required to submit five 2-page response papers during the semester. These response papers should be related to readings assigned throughout the semester. Review Paper: Students are required to complete a review paper project during the semester. The purpose of the term paper project is to allow and encourage students to explore topics or questions within child psychopathology that are not covered in this class. Students will be required to turn in an outline (2-3 pages), rough draft, and final draft of the review paper (10 pages).
